Echidna was kind enough to explain me this one at the EndGame party. Not that it's a Milo-kind of card : I'm just not mathematics inclined !

There's more than one answer to this puzzle (at least in my mind). I initially overthought it, and came up with 18 using the pattern

1
Add the next odd (3) to 1: 4
square it: 9

Start over
1
add the next odd (5) to 1: 6
square it: 25

start over
1
add the next odd (7) to 1: 8

So yeah, I waaaay over thought it.

Re: #002 - Issue 1 - Break in (red suits)

Spoiler: (highlight to read)

There is actually a connection between odd numbers and square numbers:

Take for example the identity:

(x+1)^2 = x^2 + 2x + 1

or:

(x+1)^2 - x^2 = 2x + 1

Note that 2x+1 is always an odd number because 2x is always even. So to get to the next square number from another you find you corresponding odd number then add it on:

e.g. the next square number from 400, 400=20^2

2(20)+1 = 41

therefore the next square number is 441=21^2

This may be the type of pattern spotted before
