I know I'm probably gonna kick myself in the ass when I figure it out, but I can't seem to think of what it is. Is it really that simple?

As with most riddles similar to this one...Let's just say hindsight is 20/20. You just have to figure it out, I guess (and you will, eventually).

God i was kicking my self when i solved this one, I answered it several times without realising it

I think the 'it' in the text is... misleading. Read the question as

If you eat ....., you will die.
..... is greater than God.
...
The poor have ......

Before my mum figured it out, I was considering stupid things like 'Poisoned Chocolate.' But that's nowhere near the real answer, if you were getting ideas.
